What is Supported Living in California?

Supported Living Services (SLS) is a California Department of Developmental Services program that helps adults with developmental disabilities live independently in homes they own or rent in Placerville, El Dorado County, and surrounding communities — not in group facilities, but in real homes, in real neighborhoods.

Through the Individual Program Plan (IPP) process at Alta California Regional Center, each person receives a personalized in-home support plan that adapts to their needs. SLS is fully funded through the Regional Center system — there is no direct cost to individuals or families.

Janis founded Janis Escamilla Supported Living Services in 2006 with one commitment: helping adults with developmental disabilities live independently in their own homes throughout Placerville and El Dorado County.

With nearly two decades of hands-on experience in developmental services, Janis has built an organization known for its compassionate, person-centered approach. She and her team understand that true independence means different things to different people — and work alongside each individual to achieve the life they choose.

What does “Supported Living” mean? +
Supported Living means that an individual with a developmental disability lives in their own home — an apartment, house, or other residence they own or rent — and receives personalized support to live as independently as possible. The individual has full choice over where they live, who they live with, and how they spend their time.
How do I get started with SLS? +
Contact your service coordinator at the Alta California Regional Center. They will help determine if SLS is appropriate and help you choose a provider. You can also call us directly at (530) 903-7612.
Is there a cost for SLS? +
SLS is funded through the California Department of Developmental Services via the Regional Center system. There is no direct cost to the individual or their family. Individuals are responsible for their own living expenses.
How many hours of support can someone receive? +
The number of support hours is determined through the IPP process based on each individual's needs. Some people may need just a few hours per week, while others may require more extensive support.
Can someone choose their own support staff? +
Yes. We match individuals with staff who share their interests and personality. Individuals always have the right to request changes if a match is not working.
